What should you do after a fire?

The damage caused by a fire is emotionally draining as well as expensive to repair. Get your property recovered to its “pre-damaged” condition the first time the right way. All aspects of your fire damage repairs are handled quickly & professionally, which saves you time and money. Smoke is by far the hardest thing to remove completely. In the event that your property suffers fire damage or smoke damage, contact your insurance agent/company as soon as possible to report the incident. Ask the insurance company what to do about the immediate needs of the dwelling, such as boarding up doors/windows etc. It is typically the policyholder’s responsibility to secure their property and prevent any further damage.

There are a number of important things to consider during and after your conversation with your agent/insurance company. After the Fire:
Do Not enter the damaged site without speaking with the fire and/or police department. Fires can rekindle from hidden, smoldering remains.

If you are allowed access back into your property, be mindful of structural damage caused by the fire. Roofs and floors may be damaged and subject to collapse.

Begin to save all receipts for any money you spend immediately.

These receipts are important in showing the insurance company what you have spent related to your fire loss. Receipts can also be used for verifying losses claimed on your taxes.

If it is safe to do so or if emergency personnel can assist you, try to locate the following:

Do not throw away any damaged goods until after an inventory is made.
